FAQ

How have you been affected by the current recession?
At their March investment meeting, the Parker Foundation trustees voted to reduce the foundation’s payout significantly for the 2009 calendar year. Operating costs for the foundation have also been adjusted downward. This decision stems from a steep decline in market value due to the economic downturn. Assuming a quick rebound is not on the horizon, it is unlikely that this year’s grants payout will be exceed $500,000. To date, a total of $127,930 has been paid in grants, leaving a likely balance of $372,070 for the year for new grants and outstanding commitments.

We look forward to an eventual recovery. In the meantime, staff and trustees and our Lowell fellow will continue spend a good portion of time in the coming year in meeting with grantees and colleagues in Lowell.

Does the Foundation favor certain fields of interest (i.e. eduction, housing, human services, environment?)
No.

Does it make grants for projects outside Lowell?
Almost never.

Are non-Lowell organizations encouraged to apply for Lowell-based projects?
Yes.

Is there a preferred grant size?
There is no hard and fast rule regarding size of request or grant, but most grants fall within the range of $25,000-50,000.
Smaller requests tend to be denied, but may be considered under special circumstances.

Does the Foundation make multiple-year grants?
Occasionally, but less frequently during periods of fiscal austerity, such as the one we are now experiencing.

Do you support project, capital and operating costs?
We support project and capital costs, but, with the exception of startup grants, are reluctant to support general operations.
